A Beautiful Facility

I will not keep the secret:
3 spotted fawns at milepost 370.3 on the NYS Thruway
the fawns frolicking on the swath of green separating them from us
and life from death at 65 mph

I will not shut up about the nature path
the yellow, pink and lavender – not even the white –
wildflowers
the birdsongs
the Belted Kingfisher flying low over Red Creek
landing on a wire overhead and singing in the sun
just for me
the red stone buildings with outsized chrome numbers
orienting the visually-impaired
the interiors in soothing grays and teals
the polished wood
windowed doors
the people with limps and braces and bent backs
the wheelchairs and breathing machines
the flailing limbs

nor will I remain silent about the doctor
nose to nose with my daughter
the doctor hissing that she will die soon
unless she takes his undocumented advice
without review of symptoms or diagnostic tests
without a whiff of human compassion
without touching her
or listening
but armed with the power
of an ambush by surprise

and I will not remain silent
about Hippocrates
the groundhog I saw
at milepost 390.2
sitting quietly in the sun
doing no harm

Martha Deed at the wonderful Sporkworld.
